#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.  It is celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and other widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.

Last year, your generosity helped us successfully bring Gaga to 4-H Camp Shankitunk. (Story write-up here).  This year we would love your support in adding an exciting new team element: A TRAVERSE WALL!

What is a Traverse Wall?  The traverse wall is the simplest of the different kinds of walls.  As their name implies, traverse walls are meant to be climbed horizontally instead of vertically.

Why a Traverse Wall? This will be a great introduction to climbing walls for kids, an introduction our campers in team challenge have asked for in recent years.  The lack of height makes for a safer experience and will allow our day campers to join in the fun as well.  In addition: traversing and climbing foster important skills that align with our 4-H Camp Shankitunk mission of providing positive youth development outdoors.  Some of the skills include:

  • Getting youth active - did you know that climbing offers a full body work-out?
  • Improving working memory and cognitive skills
  • building confidence
  • Goal-setting
  • Risk Management
  • Building trust and relationships

We hope will consider making a donation to camp on #GivingTuesday to help us bring this fun activity to our Campers.

HOW? Installing the traverse wall entails clearing a site, contracting out the build to a certified company, and making it as safe as possible for everyone.  The wall is double-sided to allow for fun and interactive competition between team and consists of 6 panels (3 per side).  The cost for the project at this time is appoximately $8,000.  BONUS: In addition to feeling warm and fuzzy in your heart, you have the opportunity to leave your legacy at camp. Everyone who donates will have their name printed on a plaque recognizing their contribution to the project.

Every contribution counts:

$5 = Hand Hold

$10 = Foot Hold

$20 = Pressure Treated Barrier

$50 = Safety Mulch

$125 = 1/4 panel of the wall

$500 = Half of a wall panel (6 panels in all)

$1,000 = Full panel of the wall
